“I am happy to welcome Pope Francis’ much anticipated teaching on marriage and family life. ‘Amoris Laetitia: On Love in the Family’ is a comprehensive, practical and insightful reflection on the joys, challenges and complex realities that today’s families face worldwide.
In spite of what some hoped or feared, Pope Francis does not propose any changes in Church teaching. He does urge pastors to exercise great sensitivity and patience in accompanying all persons, especially those who find themselves living in difficult and ‘irregular’ situations.
He urges, and I do too, that readers study this lengthy text carefully to appreciate the full context and scope of this rich teaching. It is a text rooted in Sacred Scripture, the teachings of Vatican II, recent popes and various national bishops’ conferences. It is especially the fruit of the two recent Synods of Bishops on marriage and, of course, the lived experience of married persons and families from around the world.
I caution people against using the document merely to glean sound bites rather than making the effort to read the entire exhortation.
We can be thankful for the pope’s timely and prophetic teaching on these matters, which are vitally important for the flourishing of marriages, families, the Church and society. We each will find much in these pages to inspire, confirm and challenge us as we seek to make this teaching our own.”
