Artistic Director Rachel Irick said the Oklahoma City Theatre Company raised $5,000 in mostly small private donations to support its production of “The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told.”
Irick said the money would go, in part, for extra security at Civic Center Music Hall.
OKCTC's play began a run of 13 performances Thursday night.
Earlier Thursday, Oklahoma City Archbishop Paul Coakley issued a statement saying he was “deeply disappointed, saddened and disgusted” by the production.
The play's critics plan a prayer vigil outside the Civic Center on Friday, the play's official opening night. In response, supporters plan a counter-demonstration.
Dozens of pastors signed a letter objecting to the play, which has homosexual characters and satirizes biblical stories.
