“The community of believers was one heart and one mind, and no one claimed that any of his possessions were his own.” Acts 4:32
Greetings from Catholic Charities! How desperately our communities need the unity of heart and mind offered by the Gospel message of Jesus Christ in our present day! So much division, so much rancor, so little civility in our political and cultural landscape. Because of your support, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City remains a place where such unity is practiced, and where practice demonstrates it can be done.
Our staff represents a diversity of faith communities, but is Catholic in action: any are welcome, all are served, regardless of race, gender or religion. Your generosity through the Catholic Charities Annual Appeal funds help and hope through nine service locations across the archdiocese.
We realize there’s a bit of confusion about the Catholic Charities Annual Appeal and the Annual Catholic Appeal (formerly ADF) – they are not the same! The Catholic Charities Annual Appeal is the opportunity granted Catholic Charities by Archbishop Coakley to ask parishioners across the archdiocese for the resources that fund our daily operations.
The Annual Catholic Appeal funds the many good works other than those of Catholic Charities undertaken by the archdiocese. This Catholic Charities Annual Appeal is our largest source of funding year after year. It is the lifeblood of our service to the community, ties us closely to our parishes and puts the “Catholic” in Catholic Charities.
Many Catholic Charities agencies across the country are funded more than 60 percent by state or federal governments (some by 90 percent). Some have parish support at less than 3 percent of their overall budget.
Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City is your Catholic Charities precisely due to the generous support of our Catholic community. Indeed, our parish supporters, including you, comprise 34 percent of this past year’s budget (usually more than 50 percent annually, but this past year money raised previously was used for ongoing 2013 tornado and 2015 flood survivor services). That’s a wonderful level of local Catholic support!
As always, we’re very efficient, with 91 percent of dollars raised going to client assistance or services.
It may feel you’re being asked and asked again to support this or that function or need. We certainly understand the environment, and do not take your generosity for granted. As our largest and most significant fundraising effort of the year, we are hoping for increases in both overall dollars raised and especially in the number of donors – many hands make light work!
If you have not given before, please consider helping this year – no gift is too small. If you are a long-time supporter, thank you for your past, ongoing and future support. We cannot serve more than 12,130 of your neighbors in need without your generosity!
I’ll close with the quote from our Holy Father Pope Francis: “I ask: please do more! Please, give more!” It is when we share our many blessings that they are multiplied. Thank you for being a blessing to those in need.
